Abstract Organic Live Edge Burl Coffee Table for Glen!

Photobucket

I finally finished this table for a good friend, and I thought I would post some pictures. He had this vintage burl wood slab that used to belong to his aunt, and he asked me to make a new base that would be more updated and that would compliment the shape of the table top. He had a lot of great memories attached to this table. He said he remebered playing with his hotwheels on it as a small child. I was honored to oblige him. I drew up the base on the computer and that helped me to figure out all the various angles. In the end, we decided to go with a Marine Varnish for the wood top, since he might be using it for his outside patio sometimes, and we went with an oil rubbed bronze powder coated finish on the base. I think It came out pretty cool. I haven't really seen anything else like it... enjoy!

RETNA!

Retna is a local LA artist whos work I've kind of been following for the last few years. It seems like he's gotten a lot of really big commissions lately and is starting to get noticed big time. After chatting a little bit, turns out we went to the same highschool for a year, and his old studio was a few blocks from where I live, small world. I love it when guys who started off with graph really take it to the next level. I had seen a few of his pieces around town and one day while browsing at the local Art store, I noticed Retna and El Mac had put out a book, "Alianza". It's available on Amazon, but kinda pricey now :/

Here's a few shots from his solo exhibition at the Michael Kohn Gallery where I was lucky to run into him by chance. I hope one day we we can collaborate on something man!

He has great fashion sense too. Nice shirt!

Amazing Views, Killer art

Just thought I would share a couple of pictures of a house we designed at work. I really dug this open corner, we used sliding glass doors so that the whole corner opened up to the outside..

 Photobucket

The owner had an amazing art collection as well. It was cool to see this famous Barbara Kruger painting so close! He also had a cool Baldassari painting, but I didn't a shot.

up-dn chair!

http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ollin-trujillo---booth-23-design-showcase-2012-177529 Its been a while since I've posted, been super swamped. So a few weeks ago, I submitted one of my chairs to the Apartment Therapy 2012 designer Showcase and it was shortlisted! This is a concept that I came up with while chatting with my buddy Brian after work. The chair can be flipped upside down to serve as a Rocker or regular chair. Photo credit goes to my buddy Patrick Connor, thanks, you are the man! I kept the materials really simple and minimal. I used scrap steel and thick leather hide. I received a few questions after the showcase, but if anyone wants one of their own, please contact me.

Neutra Office For Lease!

I came across this ad on CL the other day. If only I could afford it, how cool would it be to open a design office in the same building of such a legendary Architect? Anyone want to go 1/7ers on it???! I'll have to do another blog post about the time Richard Neutra busted my nose ;) Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

I found this record at a thrift store a while back and thought it was pretty neat. The record kind of sucks though...

Upcycled/recycled Writer's desks

Photobucket

This was a project that I did back in March, 2012. I met Brendan and Priya through some good friends, and they commissioned me to build these 2 desks. Brendan is a writer, and the two had recently moved to a house in Silverlake, Ca. Brendan had a room staked out for his office with a window and a great view. We decided on building something super simple and modern, he also liked the worn/industrial look, and didnt mind if the desks looked "well worn". I sketched something up and we agreed on the dimensions. We agreed on 2 desks in an "L" shape. Brendan also hosted a weekly pocker night with his buddies, so we designed the desks so that they could be pushed together and used as a card table. After stewing on it for a little bit, i decided to check the local Habitat for humanity restore to see if they had anything I could use. Score! 2 matching Oak solid core doors!
Photobucket

I snatched up those doors, and hit my local scrap metal spot. I decided to use 1.25" square tubing. It felt right, and looked pretty good proportionally. Next, I fabbed up some frames.

Next, I started to cut the tops to size...

Getting closer...

Added some adjustable feet.

Here they are just before I delivered them. I still have 2 left over door pieces that we might eventually make into rolling carts that fit underneath the desks. I think they turned out nice.

For my first real (long overdue) blog post I wanted to share the Cell phone case I made earlier this year.

I made this case since I am so rough on my phone, and since I hate having a lot of things in my pockets. I drop my phone at least once a day so I designed this to be pretty rugged, and also made a pocket to hold an ID, credit card and some cash etc. I designed it so you could still plug in the charger jack when the phone is in the case. It also has a belt loop, but its thin enough to still fit in your pocket or small purse.
I searched online, and at the retail store, and the only cases really available were cheap plastic cases, made in china.
I wanted to make something cool with an americana vibe. Believe it or not I already lost the prototype while on a trip, but a new one is already in the works. It will be distressed brown leather with jeweled beads and studs. Stay tuned!
